THE TAI O VILLAGE CONSERVATION AND COLLABORATIVE GOVERNANCE PROJECT
A Project to understand and respond to development change in a unique development environment.
Tai O is a former fishing Village in Hong Kong, China. The Village is famous for “pang uk” stilt houses and threatened tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
This collaborative Project brings together researchers and stakeholders to understand and respond to Tai O’s unique situation.
PROJECT ELEMENTS
-
Data Gathering and Sharing
Beginning with the Tai O Pedestrian Traffic Monitoring Project (Winner of a 2021 Smart50 Smart City Award), we have gathered data to help quantify and visualize changes underway in Tai O Village.
-
Stilt House Conservation and Cultural Ethnography
Since 2022, our team have combined sociographic techniques with 3D LiDAR environment scanning to document Tai O’s famous stilt houses for conservation, and to understand residents’ housing satisfaction and decision-making.
-
Strategic Development Initiatives
As Tai O changes, we propose and develop projects for collective response, including tourism guidance and education venues, community programming, and more.
